Why Geology?

A world of wonder awaits you in Highline College’s geology classes that use a mix of classroom, hands-on lab activities, and field experiences to learn about Earth.

Geology is a multidisciplinary and dynamic science that studies every aspect of planetary history, materials, and processes to provide our modern society with a broad and deep understanding of the Earth. We apply this knowledge to solve problems and set policies for protecting and managing natural resources, providing expert advice to communities, ensuring public health and safety, protecting the environment for future generations, mitigating natural hazards, and so much more.

Geology majors at Highline can transfer to a 4-year degree program and go on to rewarding careers. Geologists frequently work for environmental and engineering companies, energy resource exploration and development companies, hydrogeology and groundwater protection companies, and local, state, and federal agencies.

Transfer Degrees in Geology

At Age 49, Julie Bradbury faces fear of failure head-on as she plans for future in Geology. Field Trip Classes

We have several different field classes that take you outside to see rocks and sediments in their natural settings in the Pacific Northwest. Walk on Whidbey or Bainbridge Island beaches to explore evidence of the Seattle Fault and the history of the Vashon Glacier that shaped our hills and carved the Puget Sound, or take a hike in the Cascades to explore the volcanic activities of the region. Look for GEO 151–158 in the class schedule!
